Los MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) premian los mayores hitos musicales del año y cuentan con los y las artistas musicales más destacados del panorama mundial. En la gala del 2022, celebrada el 28 de agosto en el Prudential Center de Nueva Jersey, Rosalía estaba nominada por tres de sus canciones: "Bizcochito" para Mejor canción del verano, "La Fama" junto a The Weeknd como Mejor colaboración y "SAOKO" en la categoría de Mejor edición. De los tres, la artista española consiguió la estatuilla en reconocimiento por la mejor edición, en una gala que será emitida de nuevo en MTV España el 29 de agosto a partir de las 23:00h.
Después de Jack Harlow, que ganó los premios a Mejor canción del verano, Mejor colaboración, Mejor dirección artística y Mejores efectos visuales, Taylor Swift tuvo el lugar más destacado en la entrega de premios. La artista dejó boquiabiertos a los asistentes, primero por su impresionante vestido de apariencia diamantina y después por sus galardones en las categorías de Vídeo del año, Mejor vídeo de larga duración y Mejor dirección, todos ellos por el videoclip-cortometraje "All Too Well" (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version)". Además, anunció poco después que lanzará su próximo álbum el 21 de octubre. Harry Styles, por otro lado, se alzó con el premio al Álbum del año por "Harry's House", Mejor vídeo pop con "As It Was" y Mejor cinematografía por el mismo vídeo.

Bad Bunny fue coronado Artista del año, siendo el primer cantante de habla no inglesa que consigue el reconocimiento, mientras que Billie Eilish se hizo con la Canción del año por "Happier than Ever". Lil Nas X triunfó también con los mejores Efectos visuales, la Mejor Colaboración y la Mejor dirección artística. Nicki Minaj, por otra parte, recibió el premio a Mejor vídeo de hip hop, como reina del género que es, así como el MTV VMA Video Vanguard por toda su trayectoria.
